Understanding UK Tax Rebates in 2025/26
Every year, millions of UK taxpayers pay more income tax than they owe. HMRC estimates that around 2.2 million people receive automatic P800 refunds each year, but many more go unclaimed because people don't realise they're entitled to a refund or don't know how to check.
A tax rebate occurs whenever you've paid more income tax than your liability for the year. This can happen for several reasons: your employer might have used the wrong tax code, you might not have claimed allowable work expenses, you could have started or left a job mid-year, or you may be entitled to Marriage Allowance that you haven't applied for.
For the 2025/26 tax year, the personal allowance remains at £12,570 — this is the amount you can earn before paying any income tax. If you earn between £100,000 and £125,140, your personal allowance is gradually reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000. Scottish taxpayers pay different rates through seven bands ranging from the 19% Starter Rate to the 48% Top Rate.
Common work-related expenses that qualify for tax relief include uniform washing and maintenance (£60 flat rate), tools and equipment (£120 flat rate), professional body subscriptions, and working from home costs (£6 per week or £312 per year flat rate). These deductions reduce your taxable income, not your tax bill directly, so the actual saving depends on your marginal tax rate.
Our calculator uses the official HMRC rates and thresholds for each tax year from 2021/22 onwards. It supports all five common rebate scenarios — overpaid PAYE, work expenses, wrong tax codes, marriage allowance, and multiple jobs.
